Celebrating 25 years of Healthy Cities Tutoring!
What started as one tutor with one student at one school has grown into a thriving community of volunteers from up and down the peninsula, who give the gift of their time for an hour each week to positively impact student academic success, engagement in learning and self esteem.
25th Anniversary Initiative
The Healthy Cities Tutoring 25th Anniversary Initiative is focused specifically on the core of our mission: serving our students and tutors. Healthy Cities Tutoring started in 1997 at one school and has grown into a program in 14 schools in San Carlos and Redwood City, serving over 6,000 students with over 100,000 volunteer tutor hours. This initiative is an investment in the continued success of our communities’ students.
During the pandemic, HCT quickly responded to community needs by adjusting our programs to operate virtually. Our volunteer tutors were a critical lifeline to students during remote learning and our students and tutors were meeting more frequently and for longer periods of time. But for HCT, the shift to virtual tutoring came with additional costs of training and support and the cost per student increased #%.
This year, our tutoring has operated two programs: in-person and virtual, depending on student and tutor preferences. We’ve also felt the need for HCT’s services to increase as students adjust back to in-person education and catch up the learning lost during the pandemic. As part of our growth plan, by 2023 HCT is planning to reach 500 students a year at 17 schools in San Carlos and Redwood City. Funds raised during our 25th Anniversary Initiative will be invested in HCT’s programs and operations to increase the number of students served, expand our school sites, support tutor trainings, and grow tutor recruitment efforts.
Our 25th Anniversary Initiative ensures that HCT is a thriving resource for the community.
